WINSMODE

Descriptions:
The WINS-MODE feature and the MULTI-HOMED feature are separate in Shadow IPServer. The WINS-MODE feature must be enabled with a checkbox (on the IPManager) or the WINS-MODE keyword in the NTS-SRVR.CFG file. This description does not discuss the implications of the WINS-MODE behavior, but you may recognize some of your old friends like the master browser [1D] , and the domain controller [1B] and the browser election group [1E] .

The WINS-MODE differences in IP server are as follows:
  1. Checking:
    • The following name registrations must be GROUP :
      <name> [1E] names with the 16th byte EQUAL to 1Eh (0x1E)
      <name> [1C] names with the 16th byte EQUAL to 1Ch (0x1C) [0102]__MSBROWSE__[0201]
    • The following name registrations must be UNIQUE :
      <name> [1B] names with the 16th byte EQUAL to 1Bh (0x1B) <name> [1D] names with the 16th byte EQUAL to 1Dh (0x1D). Otherwise a "refused" (5) code is returned.
  2. Groups:
    • <name>
    • [1C] names with the 16th byte EQUAL to 1Ch (0x1C):
      1. The query response is limited to 25 IP addresses. (Which 25?)
      2. If there exists a registration for
        <name> [1B] names with the 16th byte EQUAL to 1Bh (0x1B) then this entry is the first in the query response list (with the group flag on).

    • <name> [not 1C] names with the 16th byte NOT equal to 1Ch (0x1C):
      1. If there is a registration for this group, a query returns positive with one IP address equal to 255.255.255.255, otherwise a 'name error" (3) code is returned.
  3. Other:
    <name> [1D]
    names with the 16th byte EQUAL to 1Dh (0x1D)
    1. A registration always returns a positive response (no challenge)
    2. A query always returns a 'name error' (3) code.

The multi-homed implementation in Shadow IPServer:

The multi-homed machine registers each of it's IP addresses on the same unique name in separate registration packets. The server challenges with a query and the query response contains all the IP addresses that should be registered on that unique name.
There is no distinction made between 4 opcodes:
5 = Registration
8 = Refresh
9 = Refresh
15 = Multi-homed registration
These are all "Registrations".
